You Are Missing

(Rough English rendition of Piyali’s ‘Hariyechhi Tomaye’.
The original is really readable.)

The album hauls me in this murky night
To live those moments again.
But then, you are not there; only the
Long cherished memories and good olden days.

Remember the wet evening
When I saw you about the turn…
First glimpse, first meeting, first liking
And? And my first love

But that was a different earth
My world was pink with joy, and
The sky was blue with dreams.
Now, I find none of these
Nor, do our steps redeem.

You never thought of me before leaving,
You left and were gone, and
Gone with you my first feelings.
All I had was my first love,
And the bitter taste of first failure,
Which you cruelly gave me.

I lost you in this mortal jungle
Neither I am within me.

Afterword:

In case you are wondering who is this Piyali, we were taking tutions from the same teacher while we were doing graduation in English. She once gave this poem written by her in Bengali to me and asked to translate it to english. I don't know if I have done justice to the original work, but then she didn't hate me after that, so I assumed it was not all that bad. Last known reports indicate that she has got married and settled in Orissa. I hope she has got the man of her dreams and is happy.
