Death and Eternity

I saw the Eternity the other night,
Sitting by the brook,
With one arm over his shoulders,
Looking Death in his eyes.

She was there for the whole night,
Humming songs of life.
And Death by her side,
Sat thralled,
With tears brimming in his eyes.

Her voice was like soft steps,
Or like the butterflies flying.

But suddenly I was awake again,
For, with night, her voice was dying.

Death, his head on her knees,
Was still looking at her eyes.
And tears, like that deathless brook,
Flowed quietly, shining in the moonlight.

Eternity took his hand in hers,
And said in a voice unearthly –

“Don’t weep my only love,
For the night will come again,
And again
Together we will be.”
